Ouroboros

I continue to explore themes related to Plato’s elements -- earth, air, fire and water.

For several reasons I named this work “Ourboros”: I chose the alternative spelling “ourboros” vs “uroboros” because I am now associated with the glass maker; I made this mosaic at Uroboros’ Glass Studios, Inc., with recycled Uroboros art glass. Also, I started it at the end of 2016 and ended it at the start of 2017.

Finally, the composition for this faithlessly rendered mosaic (I had a mishap, which did not matter much because I decided from the start to go abstract) was a close image (photo credit to Mary Sollinger) of a stream, blending an angled view of the streambed in the top half (includes rocks, moss and caught leaves) with the reflection of fall foliage against a cobalt blue sky, symbolizing the endless cycles of water and seasons, and several floating maple leaves. With few signposts that suggest identity and scale, viewers perceive various patterns, depending on their life experiences and orientation of the image.

Therefore, the mosaic is wired to hang in all orientations.
